Slow Down: Discovering the Magic of Self-Love

NYC Nick Gates

What does self-love have to do with yoga, wellness and fitness? Everything. According to yoga teacher, Eugene Gant, the most consistent thing in existence is space. In that space, there is silence where many beautiful accomplishments are waiting to be uncovered. You must ask, are you present with yourself enough? The more silent you become, the better you will be at listening to yourself. Once you find something (yoga, music, meditation) that enables you to be thoughtful and still, you can connect with yourself. This will lead you to have a deeper connection of who you are.

After losing my boyfriend, Nick Gates, at the end of October in 2017, I decided to spend more time trying to discover the magic of self-love. It’s something I’ve spent a lot of time with recently. Yoga, meditation, friends and family have been the most supportive during this heartbreaking time. Some people ask me if I would consider moving away from NYC. I took time after he died to go home to South Africa and spend time with family, but the answer is no. I love NYC and know that running away is not the answer. The world we were building together is here. The places we visited are here. My friends are here. The ability to control my mind and connect with myself is what will help me find that deeper connection and come to terms with this loss. When we are able to slow down, as I’ve been trying to learn, then something very magical happens.

Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and I will think of you and cherish our memories every single day for the rest of my life.

While I miss Nick every single day, losing him has taught me a lot about finding peace and purpose with myself. I’m trying not to get caught up in so much fuss: comparing myself to others and thinking negatively about myself. There is so much we should be grateful for: our health, well-being, and ability to laugh, cry, smile, kiss. Remember that.

Many people in today’s busy corporate life, especially in NYC, don’t take time to listen to themselves or take a moment. The work day ends, and they are onto the next thing. It’s rush, rush, rush, rush.

Yoga, flow work, and meditation is the answer. This will lead you to finding a little more self-love. It’s so important to sit with your thoughts. At the end of the day, you will need to reconcile your inner voice and come into a deeper understanding of why you’re here, and what that looks like for yourself and the people in your life.

The new fitness and wellness app, RockItWorkIt, invited Eugene Gant to discuss this topic and his experiences. In the below photo taken from the RIWI video with Eugene shows how passionate he is about this topic. To view the full clip click here. In the video, Eugene says yoga reminds you to breathe and it teaches you the magic of self-love. When you have a silent mind, more creative ideas will flow. Eugene has been motivating people with practical teachings that encourage a “conscious lifestyle ~ healthy body, clear mind and an open heart. Eugene combines Shakti Naam Yoga therapies, breathing techniques and meditation, fused with empowering mantras, and plenty of laughter.” (source)

To learn more from Eugene and his journey, visit RockItWorkIt’s Youtube channel. There you will find several trainers, nutritionists, yogi teachers who talk about topics that can guide you to finding a bit more self-love. Healthy lifestyle, healthy eating, and loving yourself are so important, especially in 2018. The trends to be “healthy” and “love yourself” are more and more common. People are watching what they eat more than ever, and more people are becoming health conscious. It’s not always about hardcore exercise and burning calories, but about exercise and flow work to find that mindfulness.

Please share your thoughts with us on this topic below or message the RockItWorkIt team on Facebook or Instagram. We will be interviewing a young and passionate yogi teacher and Food Studies graduate, Molly Hentz, tomorrow. Stay tuned to our Instagram stories and Youtube channel to see what she has to say.
